4 prize packages added;

value has gone from over $1600 to almost $2200

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Over 15,700 American children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and sadly 38 children die every week. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

Take a chance to win one of these great gift packs by making a donation to The Great Cycle Challenge benefiting the Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Over 25 amazing artisans & vendors generously offered prizes totaling over $1,600! There are more chances to win this year! 17 (or more) lucky winners will receive one of 17 (or more) prize packs valued between $50 & $200! Scroll to the bottom of this post for a detailed listing of the prize packs.

For each $5 donation, we will enter your name once into the drawings. No limit on how many donations you can make. Contest open through September 30. Winners announced Wednesday, October 4th at 8:30p.m. EST, Live on the @take.care.man Instagram account!

My Favorite Shaving Scents for Fall 2022

I love this time of year. It stays hot here in the Southern U.S. through September, but October usually brings a gradual cooldown. When it does, out come the fall / autumn scents. In the video below, I list the 10 scents I am looking the most forward to using in October and November before I break out the Christmas soaps after Thanksgiving.

Similar Scents Series: Barbershops Part 1

I did another soap comparison shave today. These 4 barbershop scents are very similar.

  • Zingari Man's The Wanderer

  • Maggard’s London Barbershop

  • MIke’s Natural Soaps Barbershop

  • The Shave Mercantile's Classic Country Barber

I did another soap comparison shave today. These 4 barbershop scents are very similar.

Barbershops: Part 1

They share the scent notes of

  • basil

  • bergamot

  • oakmoss

  • patchouli.

Zingari Man's The Wanderer also lists the added note of citrus. The Shave Mercantile's Classic Country Barber adds the note of powder.

Maggard's London Barbershop and The Wanderer smell identical to me. The oakmoss, and perhaps the basil, have a sharpness that is not offensive but definitely burns my nose a bit. I also think they both gave me a very slight fragrance reaction.

Mike's Natural Barbershop, is very similar to these two, but the notes are more subdued and there is a slight creaminess to the scent. I am not sure if it is a lower scent ratio or if the base rounds off the sharpness.

The Shave Mercantile's Classic Country Barber is definitely the most unique of the four. It is noticeably less sharp. The oak moss is subdued a bit by the powder, and there is a slight touch of sweetness.

All 4 are good performers.

Similar Scents Series: Aroma Therapy Scents Part 1

I am trying to thin my shaving supplies a bit more, and one way I am doing that is by comparing soaps that have similar, if not identical, scents. I am also doing this to try to better define the different genres of scents in the traditional wet shaving world. I would classify 3 of the 4 in this shave as aromatherapeutics, meaning they have aroma therapy benefits and are generally scented with essential oil. Lavender and cedar wood take center stage on this one.

The first 4 soaps / creams in my scent comparison shaves.

I lathered up the 4 soaps and did 3 passes and a face wash.

The scent on St. James of London Lavender & Geranium was a bit too synthetic and unisex for my taste.

The Crown & Crane Lavender and Cedar was too lightly scented for me, which is an exception for that brand.

The Ariana & Evans and Shave Mercantile soaps were very similar in scent. Both are a woody lavender, meaning cedar wood forward.

The performance of all 4 were solid, but the Ariana & Evans Shave Butter’s slickness/glide is outstanding. You have to load a bit heavy though. When I say it is outstanding, I mean you cannot help but notice how much better it is.

Of the 4, I think the Ariana & Evans Wood & Lavender Shaving Butter is the keeper. While I wish the scent was a little stronger, more like the Shave Mercantile Lavenwood (Lumberjack Edition), the performance of the Shaving Butter stands out.

I used a Blackland Vector with a Feather Super Pro on its 5th use and a variety of synthetic brushes. I followed up the shave with A&E Wood & Lavender Rice Water Serum.
